This species s. lat. is restricted to Europe, N. Africa and Iran. It is locally adventive. The two subspecies, distinguished in Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 301, viz. subsp. montanum in C. and S. Europe and subsp. gmelinii (Jord.) Hegi & Schmid in C. and E. Europe, are not mapped separately. Cf., however, Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 183.
