602 Salix phylicifolia L.

This polymorphic and widespread, mainly boreal-montane species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. Besides the main type (subsp. phylicifolia) in N. Europe and W. Siberia some subspecies and lower taxa are distinguished, with more or less well-defined distribution areas. Marked separately on the map are subsp. pulchra (Cham.) Hult. in Siberia and northwestern N. America, subsp. planifolia (Pursh.) Hiit. over a large area of N. America and subsp. planifolia var. monica (Bebb.) Hult. in the Rocky Mts. Further, the closely related species S. parallelinervis Flod. in Kamchatka, S. tontomussirensis Koidz. on Sakhalin and S. kikodseae Goerz in Caucasus are mapped here. On the other hand, the likewise closely related European species S. bicolor Willd. in the European mountains (excl. the Alps), S. hegetschweileri Heer in the Alps and S. hibernica Rech. fil., endemic to Ireland, are marked with the same symbol as subsp. phylicifolia. For the detailed distribution of these species see Atlas Fl. Eur. 3/1976, map 222. S. phylicifolia s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 136 and map 127).
