This rather variable species occurs mainly from W. Europe and NW. Africa eastwards to C. Asia. It is adventive at least in some of the Fennoscandian localities. It has been introduced into S. Africa, N. America and Australia. The species is reported among the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 226 and map 216), although there is a wide gap of distribution from C. Asia to NW. North America.
