This polymorphic species is originally restricted mainly to Europe. For the subspecies distinguished in Europe and their distribution, see Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 229. The area of the southern subsp. aleae (Willk.) Rouy & Fouc. is presented on the map. The species is widely spread, for instance to N. America and New Zealand.
