This variable species occurs in C. and S. Europe, NW. Africa and in some Asiatic mountains. It also occurs as an adventive in several places outside the map area. The closely related G. kamtschaticum Steller in E. Asia and northwestern and eastern N. America and G. oreganum Britt. in the Cascade Mts. are also mapped.
