This Eurasiatic species probably originates from the steppes of S. Russia and Asia. From there it has spread as a weed westwards and northwards in Europe, to Japan and N. and S. America. It has now an almost circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 228 and map 218). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 41.
