This variable, mainly arctic-montane species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. Besides the main type (subsp. glauca) in Eurasia and northwestern N. America, some subspecies are distinguished, with more or less well-defined distribution areas. Marked separately on the map are subsp. acutifolia (Hook.) Hult. in easternmost Asia and northwestern N. America, subsp. glabrescens (Anderss.) Hult. from Alaska southwards through the Rocky Mts. and subsp. callicarpaea (Trautv.) Böcher in arctic Canada, Greenland and Iceland (syn.: S. cordifolia Pursh., Löve Islenzk Ferdaflora 1970). For northwestern N. America see also Porsild and Cody 1980, maps 414-417. Within the area of subsp. glauca the subsp. stipulifera (Flod.) Hiit. (syn.: S. glauca var. appendiculala Wahlenb.) occurs here and there (cf. Hultén, Atlas 1971, map 569). In the Pyrenees and the Alps S. glauca is replaced by the closely related species S. pyrenaica Gouan and S. glaucosericea Flod., respectively (see the map). S. glauca s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. II, p. 321 ff. and map 46).
