This species is polymorphic and widespread. S of the line through Europe the subsp. onopteris (L.) Heufl. occurs. This species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants according to Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 150 and map 142), although it is lacking in large areas of Asia and N. America. For Europe cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 14. A few specimens from W. Norway are identified as A. cuneijolium Viv. (0vstedal in Blyttia 38/1980, p. 19-22), occuring in C. and S. Europe (usually on serpentine rocks, see Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 16). Cf. also Atlas Fl. Eur. 1/1972, map 92.
