1621 Hyoscyamus niger L.

This species is considered to originate from the Mediterranean region and W. Asia. From there it has been widely spread as a medicinal plant in Eurasia and it has partly become naturalized. In the area S of the braken line on the map subsp. agrestis (Kit.) Hult. also occurs. The species has also been introduced and partly naturalized for instance in N. America, Australia and New Zealand. The present distribution is discontinuous circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 286 and map 278.) Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 386.
