This polymorphic species has a very wide, disjunct distribution. There are also large distribution areas in C. and S. Africa, India and C. and S. America (cf. Meusel et al. 1965, world map p. 11). Several varieties are distinguished (cf. Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 262). Those which are represented within the map area are mapped separately. The species is classified among the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, I. cit. and map 244).
