This mainly arctic species belongs to the amphiatlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 50 and map 32). In the C. and S. European mountains the closely related E. minima Jacq. occurs. The map is in several respects preliminary. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 408.
