This species, which originates from N. America, is nowadays widely distributed in Europe. It has been introduced as an ornamental plant into Europe and other parts of the world, for instance S. Africa and New Zealand. It has often escaped from garden to waste land in the neighbourhood. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 300.
