524 Carex distans L.

This variable species occurs in most of Europe and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. In the Mediterranean region several lower taxa are distinguished. Eastwards the species is unevenly distributed and, furthermore, insufficiently known. Cf. the more detailed map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 77. It is reported from the coast of Maryland in N. America, probably as an introduced plant.
