512 Carex capillaris L.

This mainly boreal-montane species belongs to an intricate group of Eurasiatic and N. American taxa (cf. Löve, Löve and Raymond in Can. J. Bot. 35/1957, p. 715-761; Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 54; Hylander, Nord. kärlväxtfl. 2/1966, p. 147ff.; Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 305 f.). It belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, l. cit.). Within and partly outside the range subsp. chlorostachys (Stev.) Löve et al. has been distinguished, which has a more arctic-montane occurrence. It is tentatively mapped here although it does not seem to be generally accepted as a separate taxon (cf. Hylander, l. cit.; Fl. Eur., l. cit.). The dots in N. America indicate known localities of both subspp. capillaris and chlorostachys. Porsild and Cody (1980) present, however, separate maps with dots for each subspecies (nos. 219 and 220). For the N.
