This arctic-montane, polymorphic species is widely but disjunctly distributed in Eurasia and N. America. It is concentrated to C. Asia. It is a synanthropic plant in E. Fennoscandia. It belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 329, and map 64). Further, the known localities of the closely related P. virgulata A. Nels. in western and northwestern N. America are marked.
