Within this variable species subsp. septentrionalis has a wide but scattered occurrence in arctic, boreal and mountain areas, together forming a circumpolar distribution pattern (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 350 and map 118). In western N. America subsp. puberulenta (Rydb.) Knuth is distinguished, also occurring locally in Mexico. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 342.
