This species is widely distributed in Europe and W. Asia. It has probably been introduced into N. America (or native on New Foundland). The present distribution is ampi-atlantic (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 162 and map 143). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 388.
