This species occurs in Europe, N. Africa and W. Asia. It has been introduced into a few places in Africa and N. and S. America. It is replaced by the closely related V. americana (Raf.) Schwein. In temperate N. America and parts of Pacific E. Asia. These species together have a discontinuous circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 172, 378 and map 164).
