Syn.: R. rubrum L. p. p.

This polymorphic species, the taxonomy and nomenclature of which are complicated (cf. Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 383), occurs in nearly the whole of Europe and large parts of Asia. It is widely cultivated (also outside the map area), mostly named R. rubrum L., originating probably from W. Europe. Among other closely related taxa (species or subspecies) the following are tentatively mapped, viz. R. pubescens Hedl. in C. and E. Europe, R. scandicum Hedl. in C. Fennoscandia and NW. Russia, R. glabellum Hedl. in N. Fennoscandia and N. Russia and Siberia, R. hispidulum Pojark. in E. Russia and W. Siberia and R. paiczewskii Pojark. in E. Asia. R. rubrum is naturalized in eastern and central N. America.
