Within this widespread, partly anthropochorous species s. lat. at least three subspecies may be distinguished, viz. subsp. sceleratus, widely distributed in Eurasia and (introduced) in N. America and other places of the world, subsp. reptabundus (Rupr.) Hult. in N. Europe and NW. Siberia and subsp. multifidus (Nutt.) Hult. dominating in central and western N. America. The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 300 and map 291).
