This widespread species is introduced into several parts of the world. This is true for at least N. Europe, N. India, New Zealand and N. America. Thus, it is not a true amphi-atlantic plant. In fact, the S. fragilis population in most of W. and C. Europe may also originate from the eastern and southeastern parts of the range. The hybrid with S. alba (Meusel 1965, map p. 113) seems to be more common than S. fragilis.
