This species occurs in large parts of Eurasia and N. America. According to Tolmachev (Fl. aret. URSS 6/1971, p. 42) subsp. regelii occurs from N. Canada westwards to the Gulf of Ob and subsp. caespitosum (Malmgr.) Tolm. from Alaska to Ob. Subsp. regelii belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 20 and map 1). The species s. lat. Is circumpolar, however with some gaps.

This arctic to subarctic-montane species is restricted to NE. Europe, Asia and Alaska. In some parts of the Siberian area, it is incompletely known.
