This species occurs in large parts of Eurasia. Subsp. rossica (Nas.) Hyl. (syn.: S. serotina Pall.) with obscure distribution in E. Europe is included in the area of S. viminalis. The boundary lines are tentative. They enclose also C., NW., W. and SW. Europe, where the species is introduced (broken boundary-lines). Further, it has been introduced into N. America. The distributions of the closely related S. armeno-rossica Skvorts. in Caucasus, S. turanica Nas. in the C. Asiatic mountains and S. schwerinii E. Wolf in E. Asia are also mapped.
