This species is restricted to Europe (except E and extreme N and S). In same areas it is rare or lacking. The population on the Azores has been distinguished as subsp. azorica (Gay) Franco & Rocha Afonso. Closely related species occur in Asia. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 72.
