This species is mainly boreal. Besides the widely distributed, Eurasiatic subsp. lasiocarpa, the E. Asiatic subsp. occultans (Franch.) Hult. and the N. American subsp. america (Fem.) Hult. are distinguished. The species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 76 and map 67). F urthermore, the closely related C. lanuginosa Michx in N. America and C. fedia Nees in the S.C. Asiatic mountains are tentatively mapped.
