This mainly European species is less frequent in S. and SW. Europe (but more common than the map shows). It is there replaced by (and confused with) A. italicum Mill. Towards the east, in the Black Sea area, subsp. orientale Bieb. is distinguished (cf., however, Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 270). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 80.
