This boreal-montane species is indigenous mainly in Europe. It has been introduced into N. America and New Zealand. Its distribution in Russia and Siberia is not clear. With its present distribution it belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 140.
