This species occurs in Europe and N. America. An occurrence in Patagonia is described as subsp. patagonicum (Christ) Claus. Two (or more) populations in the interior of N. America are distinguished as subsp. hesperinum Maxon & Claus. The species belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 64 and map 46). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 10.
