This arctic species, restricted to Europe, is included in the C. alpinum complex (Hultén in Sv. Bot. Tidskr. 50/1956, p. 411 ff.). Further, the very restricted area in the Pyrenees of the closely related C. glaberrimum Lapeyr. is mapped here.
