This widespread species includes two fairly well distinguished subspecies, viz. subsp. norvegica originating from E. Europe and W. Asia and spread by man west wards (also to N. and S. America and New Zealand), northwards (Fennoscandia) and probably east wards, and subsp. monspeliensis (L.) Asch. & Gr. distributed over a large area of N. America and spread locally to Europe. Totally the species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 178, 379 and map 170).
