This species s. lat. is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. Subsp. amarella occurs in Europe and W. and C. Siberia. The population in Scotland and on Iceland is distinguished as subsp. septentrionalis (Druce) P ritch. in Fl. Eur. 3/1972, p. 65. In C. and NE. Asia and in N. America subsp. acuta (Michx) Hult. is widely distributed. The population on the Aleutians and along the Alaskan coast is subsp. acuta var. plebeja (Cham.) Hult. Subsp. heterosepala (Engelm.) Gill. occurs in the S. Rocky Mts. Totally the species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 138, 360 f. and map 130). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 356.
