This rather polymorphic species (easily hybridizing) occurs as a native plant in Europe and W. Asia. In the S. European mountains subsp. crassifolium (Lam.) Murb. dominates. It has been introduced into several parts of the world, for instance N. and S. America and New Zealand. The present distribution is discontinuous circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol.
