This almost homomorphic species originates from Europe. It has been introduced into large parts of Asia and N. America and also into scattered places in S. America, Africa, Australia, New Zealand etc. The recent distribution is circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 246 and map 237).
