This rather variable species includes same lower taxa in E. Asia (var. ozeensis [Miki] Hara) and N. America (a taxon generally reported as a species, N. microphylla [Pers.] Fem.). Hybrids with N. lutea and variegata are reported. The species s. lat. is recorded among the circumpolar plants in spite of a large gap from E. Siberia to central N. America (Hultén, Circumpol.
