This polymorphic, arctic-montane species occurs disjunctly in Europe, northwesternmost Asia and N. America. The lower taxa (according to Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 141, four subspecies in Europe) are not mapped separately. However, subsp. glabratum (Hartm.) A. & D. Löve is here reported as a species glabratum (no. 745). The C. alpinum complex is thoroughly dealt with by Hultén (Sv. Bot. Tidskr. 50/1956, p. 411 ff.). The species s. lat. belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 40 and map 22).
