Syn.: C. angarae Steud.; C. norvegica Retz. subsp. inferalpina (Wahlenb.) Hult.

This arctic to subarctic-montane species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 36 and map 29). The subspecies pusteriana Kalela and brachylepis (Turcz.) Kalela occurs in restricted areas in the Alps and at Lake Baikal, respectively. The closely related C. stevenii (Th. Holm) Kalela (syn.: C media var. stevenii [Th. Holm] Fem.) in the Rocky Mts. is also mapped. Cf. comments to map no. 487.
