This arctic-montane species belongs to the amphiatlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 112 and map 94). The distribution in especially C. and SW. Europe is generalized. On the Iberian Peninsula, Sardinia and in the Atlas region the subsp. lagascae (Pau) Bolos & Montserrat is distinguished. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 196.
