This polymorphic species occurs in the continental area of C. and E. Europe and the adjacent parts of Asia. It has locally escaped from cultivation, for instance in S. Finland. There are closely related taxa in the Orient and in Spain. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 103.
