21 Ophioglossum vulgatum L.

This polymorphic species occurs mainly in Eurasia and N. America. The map includes the mainly W. European subsp. ambiguum (Cosson & Germ.) E. F. Warb. (syn.: subsp. polyphyllum auct., O. azoricum C. Presl) and, probably by mistake, also a few localities of the southern O. lusitanicum L. These taxa are mapped separately in Atlas Fl. Eur. 1/1972, maps 40-42. The N. American population consists of some varieties (cf. int. al. Fernald, Manual 1951, p. 23; Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 100, and F l. Alaska Neighbor. Terr., p. 39), and so does the E. Asiatic group. Outside the map area the species s. lat. is reported from at least Mexico, equatorial W. Africa and Sao Torne. It belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 100 and map 91), although there are wide gaps in the distribution. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 10.
