This widespread species is considered to originate from S. and E. Europe and W. Asia. From there it has been introduced as a medicinal plant into most of Europe, S. Africa, N. America, Australia and New Zealand. It has often escaped from gardens and become more or less naturalized. The present distribution is discontinuous circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol.
