Within the disjunct range of this mainly arcticmontane species some lower taxa are distinguished, especially in Japan, int. al. var. planiramulosum (Franch. & Sav.) Baker. This main type (subsp. alpinum) is given the name subsp. cupressifolium (Opiz) Dostal. This species belongs to the amphiatlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 234 and map 215).
