Within this polymorphic species same lower taxa are distinguished. Subsp. kali is originally restricted to Europe, mainly to the coasts. In many places in C. Europe and along the coasts of, for instance, the Gulf of Bothnia, it is casual. Towards the south subsp. tragus (L.) Nym. dominates. Subsp. ruthenica (Iljin) Soó occurs from C. and S. Europe far eastwards. It still seems to be unsettled whether this species is native or not in N. America (cf. Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 13). Nevertheless, it is widely distributed there. It is considered to be native in Australia but probably introduced in New Zealand and S. Africa. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 135.
