This species s. lat. is widely hut disjunctly distributed in Eurasia and N. America. In most of Europe (excl. southern parts) subsp. vulgare occurs. In S. Europe subsp. arundanum (Boiss.) Nym. dominates. E of the European range subsp. integerrimum (Boriss.) in W.C. Asia and subsp. chinense Briq. in E. and SE. Asia take over. In N. America subsp. neogaeum (Fem.) M. J. W. is distinguished. The species s. lat. belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 74 and map 56). Cf. world map in Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 382.
