This widespread species occurs in large parts of Europe and locally in E. Asia, mostly along the seashores. Apparently, there is a wide gap between these two areas. It occurs also on the east and west coasts of N. America und locally inland. In southwestern N. America and C. and S. America subsp. anachaeta (Torr.) Hult. is distinguished. The species is recorded among the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 142 and map 134).
