This species is mainly restricted to W., C. and partly S. Europe. Approximately S of the broken line subsp. australe (Ten.) Rouy & Fouc. also occurs. The species has been introduced into S. Africa and New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 284.
