This species is mainly restricted to Europe. It is adventive in the localities N of Denmark and Scania. Closely related species occur in Asia and America. The Asiatic H brevisubulatum (Trin.) Link is tentatively mapped. Both taxa are also mapped in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 43.
