The origin of this species is uncertain but may be looked for in S. Europe and parts of Asia. It has been widely spread as a weed, for instance in C. and partly N. Europe, C. Africa, S. and E. Asia, N. and S. America and Australia. The species is reported among the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 234 and map 223).
