This subarctic to boreal-montane species occurs in parts of Europe and W. Asia. Besides the main type (subsp. lapponum) in N. Europe and W. Siberia the subsp. helvetica Vill. in the Alps and Carpathians and S. marubifolia Tausch ex Anderss. in Bulgaria (not marked separately) should be mentioned. Further, the closely related E. Asiatic S. krylovii E. Wolf is mapped together with S. baicalensis Turcz. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 116.
