Syn.: S. depressa auct., S. livida Wahlenb.

This polymorphic and widespread species forms, together with same other species, a critical complex, in Hultén, Circumpol. Il, called the "Salix depressa complex". The confusion as to taxonomy and nomenclature in this complex (cf. op. cit., p. 134) causes great uncertainty in mapping the different taxa. On this map the main type S. starkeana covers large parts of N. Europe mainly S of the line there, while subsp. cinerascens (Wahlenb.) Hult. (syn.: S. xerophila Flod.) continues eastwards through most of N. Eurasia. From this distribution area in central Asia a special type called S. iliensis Regel forms an alpine offset towards the south (marked by a broken line). In N. America the closely related species S. bebbiana Sarg. (syn.: S. rostrata Richards.) with boreal distribution and the alpine S. geyeriana Anderss. occur.
