This subspecies with bisexual flowers has a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 86, 338 and map 78). The closely related E. eamesii Fem. & Wieg. subsp. eamesii and subsp. atropurpureum (Fem. & Wieg.) D. Löve, both in eastern N. America, are also mapped. See further no. 1463.
